Coconut Island is located in the Hoa Binh reservoir tourist area in Vay Nua commune of Da Bac highland district and was recognized as a tourist attraction by Hoa Binh People's Committee according to the Decision No. 98/QĐ-UB of January 24, 2013.
There are many ways to Coconut island, but the most convenient direction is through Thung Nai harbor, which is located about 20km from the center of Hoa Binh city along the Tay Tien and Thung Nai roads.
From Thung Nai harbor, it takes about 30 minutes by boat on the Hoa Binh reservoir to visit Coconut Island. The process of damming to build Hoa Binh Hydroelectricity Plant has created a large reservoir, the tops of hills and mountains become islands with various sizes in the immense water creating a "Ha Long Bay on the mountain" with the beautiful and poetic landscape. On the boat, guests have the chance to admire the charming landscape, the stilted roofs of Muong, and Dzao villages hidden in green trees on islands and peninsulas in the reservoir.
Coconut Island has an area of 10 hectares, now included in the investment planning to exploit and use 2 hectares. At first, it was just like other pristine islands with forest trees, bushes, vines tangled. After years of renovation and the owner brought more than 200 coconut trees from Thanh Hoa to plant around the island with dozens of other fruit trees. The coconut trees on the island now grow green becoming the most outstanding thing on the island, giving the island an unmistakable nuance, the name Coconut Island has been formed since then.
To become a tourist destination, the owner of Coconut Island has built 17 large stilt houses on the island following the traditional architecture of Muong and Thai people, each house can accommodate 30 to 50 people with full of living facilities are resting places, the dining area can serve 500 portions at once, entertainment area, campfire area, community cultural exchange, sports activities, fishing areas, walking areas, public toilets, 5 passenger ships with a capacity of 60 passengers per time with full of protective equipment and several small motorized boats to serve retail guests with anchorages for boats are arranged in harmony with the natural scenery of plants, trees, and clouds.
Despite being an island area on the reservoir, fortunately, Coconut Island is still able to use the national electrical grid to meet the needs of living, a large power generator system always ready to be available when power outages, so visitors can still watch some central and local television channels. The telephone communication system is in good condition; you can maintain regular contact with other places.
Coconut Island welcomes 300 to 350 visitors a week. Each year, about 14,400 to 16,800 visitors come to Coconut Island, mainly students, graduate students, factory employees, companies, households, pilgrims to Bo temple, etc. In which the number of overnight guests accounts for about 25%.
Nowadays, in addition to traditional services for tourists, Coconut Island has expanded its waterway transport activities on the reservoir to transfer tourists to the island and visit the scenic spots, tourist sites on the reservoir such as Thac Bo temple, Thac Bo cave, Love waterfall - Trach stream, Ngoi Hoa bay, Hoa Tien cave, Windmill island, Green island, Pearl island, etc.; expanded tourism products, hiking, fishing, etc. for visitors to experience and explore, especially planed and constructed large-scale events area such as conferences and seminars, thematic training, parties, meetings, camping, etc. to serve the needs of tourists right on Coconut Island.
Located in Hoa Binh reservoir tourist area - which has been planned by the Government to be national in the Vietnam Tourism Development Master Plan to 2020, with a vision to 2030, Coconut Island has become a destination attracting domestic and international tourists when coming to Hoa Binh./.
